Yeley and The Gray Ghost Finish 16th at Darlington
DARLINGTON, SC (September 6, 2015) - In what was an exciting Saturday afternoon in Darlington, SC, J.J. Yeley and his JGL Racing team paid tribute to the late Buddy Baker and his infamous "Gray Ghost" car. After a strong qualifying effort and first half of the race, Yeley would settle for a 16th-place finish with his No. 28 Gray Ghost Toyota in the running of the VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway.
"It was very exciting out there today," said Yeley. "We had an awesome No. 28 Toyota and that showed in our qualifying effort. We were strong there in the early stages of the race and passed a lot of good cars. We just weren't as good on the long green flag runs in the second half of the race. Then we lost some spots on the last green flag stops in the closing laps. But in all, this was a strong performance and another building block for this JGL Racing team."
The No. 28 Gray Ghost Toyota would start the 200-mile event from the 11th position after a strong qualifying performance earlier in the day which saw Yeley and his JGL Racing team advance to the final round of qualifying. When the green flag flew, the No. 28 Gray Ghost Toyota would rocket through the field much like the legendary Buddy Baker. When a scheduled competition caution flew at lap 25, J.J. was solidly inside the top-10 but dealing with a little tight in the center condition which was hurting his exit off the corner.
With only one additional caution occurring in the 147-lap event, Yeley and his JGL Racing team encountered varying pit strategies in the closing laps. With just over 15 laps remaining, J.J. would bring his No. 28 Toyota down pit road under green flag conditions for four tires and fuel. As some cars gambled and didn't pit, Yeley would take the checkered flag in the 16th position - his 16th top-20 finish this season.
"While our finish doesn't indicate it - this was one of our strongest performances this year," added Yeley. "The guys on this JGL Racing team continue their hard work and the ownership continues to do what is necessary for us to run up front. It was an absolute honor to represent Buddy Baker and pilot the No. 28 Gray Ghost Toyota this weekend in Darlington. While the Gray Ghost excitement may be over - the excitement of where this JGL Racing team is headed is just starting."
With the 16th-place finish Yeley remains 12th in the overall NASCAR XFINITY Series drivers' standings - 79 points out of the Top-10.
Yeley and his JGL Racing team will next set their sights onto Richmond International Raceway this coming weekend. The running of the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 will be Friday September 11th and can be seen LIVE on NBC Sports Network at 7:30 pm ET. It can also be heard on Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Channel 90.
